Yak 9D

This forum has been very quiet for months.....so forgive this intrusion from a sometime visitor and old friend.

Attached are pictures of my latest combat model. My good German friend Timo has been telling me for years that "balsa is better" and represents a lighter and quicker build material than my preferred foam/paper methods. So I thought I'd do a test and prove the theory one way or the other. This Yak build is a complete balsa creation with built up and sheeted wings, box fuselage etc. Everything is tissue covered, enamel painted and weathered to look used. 3 channel radio with a small NimH battery provides the controls.

My conclusion is weight is compariable between the build methods (740g for the Yak compared with 735g for the Myrsky) but build time is much longer for the balsa, about 50% longer I'd say. I'll stick with foam and paper in future* but this model does demonstrate balsa combat models are available should foam and foam cutting not appeal and still be quite cheap to build.

* - if my login keeps working and nobody minds, I'll post a wooden Gloster Meteor build when the kit arrives from Timo via the German post.....that'll look good chasing the Komet.

Enjoy the pictures........

More pictures.....forgot to say the engine cowling and canopy were "pop bottle" creations.
